SoKo - I’ll Kill Her

SoKo

There seems to be a small trend for adorable neurotic girls with accents in music at the moment. Just when you think that Sweden has this particular corner of the market covered with Hello Saferide, France have decided to hit back with the duo of SoKo.

Now I can’t tell you very much about them because they don’t have a proper website and a lot of what I did find is written in French. They do seem to comprise of SoKo Girl and SoKo Boy (I’m guessing stage names rather than vindictive parents). He tends to play the guitar while she sings, and that’s about as complex as it gets.

‘I’ll Kill Her’ is one of the those rare songs that will just sit on repeat for long periods at at time. SoKo Girl starts gently enough: she’s talking about how the guy she likes didn’t call her to go on their date. So far, so mundane. This evolves into anger as the song goes on about the “bitch” that is now in her place, through the eventual announcement that makes up the title of the song.

The interesting part here though is that the narrator seems entirely unstable. It may all be as literal as it sounds on the initial listen, or it could be so much more. Even people bitter about a breakup don’t usually launch into detailed “what ifs” about the children they would have had (even naming them Tom and Susan). At the very least, this girl has some kind of issues. Listen again though, and you start to wonder if there was even a breakup involved. She never mentions one directly. For all we know, she has never even met the guy she’s bitter about losing to someone else. This could just be the most elaborate stalker scenario put to record.

It doesn’t really matter exactly which scenario it is though. At the very least, it’s a fascinating stream of consciousness of a somewhat damaged person. It’s sung in such an informal (almost conversational) tone that it’s impossible to dislike her, no matter how crazy it may come across as at times.

You think “I’ll Kill Her” is good (and bizarre), listen to “Shitty Day” - http://virb.com/soko

This is about the best description of PMS I’ve ever heard - put to music or otherwise.

A friend gave this song to me yesterday. If one were to make a comp. of unstable narrator / stalkers, this one and Brother Ali’s Prince Charming would be no. 1 and 2.

you’re totally right, she’s a stalker, the guy she’s talking about had never been his lover and the girl unfortunatly…is a girl..that’s about jalousy, not true love..expectation and not real feelings..

her songs and the others (four or five)are spiritless and dumb.she’s not even crazy cause she’s imitating other real song writter, she’s a vampire..

“Soko girl” is Stéphanie Sokolinsky, and “Soko boy” is Thomas (Toma) Semence who is a guitarist with French rock idol Jean-Louis Aubert (of Téléphone fame).

Ever seen French movie: “À la folie… pas du tout” aka “aka He Loves Me… He Loves Me Not” with Audrey Tautou? Seems to be a trend here with French female stalkers!! ;)

I hated this song at first because it does sound as thought she unstable. But after I heard it a few times, I realised that is actually the kind of neurotic things many women think. Or at least the woman I know think.

Its like Charlotte on Sex and the City. You meet a guy and as much as you consciously want to play it cool, your fantasy mind jumps to… happily ever after. This is not based on any kind of reality about the guy and it helps if you don’t know him very well bc then you can project all of your fantasy onto him to fill the gaps.

When he doesn’t call, and you don’t know why, your paranoia is fed and your hope is crushed once again. You feel bitter and rejected. Soko expresses this so well with a touch of humour. It takes courage to say out loud what many of us thinking and I think thats why so many women have connected to it.

THey voiced wat we all think ,but never say .But must agree those idealistic presception on a realtionship …does have a stalkerish vibe.

Havn’t uz ever met someone, laughed, chatted, exchanged numbers then fantasized about what life could be like with them? Then when you realise they’ve been playing ya , get the overwhelming urge to purchase a rifle? It’s only natural. We don’t like seeing other people posess what/who we percieve/think should be ours. Actually, i’m gonna getme dat Porsche from the neighbour:)
LUUUUUV the song, makes me smile in a sokute way.

Degeneration has come, gained and cried victory… Finally some proof of it happening, when English speaking folk actually look for a meaning in an infantile song…
The accent is not charming, the phrase for this is “irritating beyond belief”. Couldn’t she have killed herself instead, and spared us this undisputable shite?
The music industry is constantly complaining about decreasing sales figures, and crap like SOKO explains it all. How can you expect to receive any appreciation for this, or the likes of Tokyo Hotel?
Anyhow, a year ago, they played the song over here as everybody thought it was a joke, a bad one, but still…
And now suddenly it’s a good song? It just proves mankind has gone over the edge, stagnation of the genepool…

Now, where is that global killer?
