New Rivers Cuomo demo: ‘Pig’
No matter how much great new music I discover, there is always one album that will seemingly ever remain my favourite: Pinkerton by Weezer. While I love the album dearly, it does make me listen to a lot of crappy songs. The crap I’m referring to is pretty much everything Weezer has recorded in the time since it’s release ten years ago. If any other band had produced that much rubbish I would have given up on them long ago, but I’m incredibly forgiving when it comes to Weezer. Apparently I still hold some subconscious hope that they can make another Pinkerton.
Every now and again though, something comes out from the Weezer camp that intrigues me a little. The last time this happened was a few years ago with the album five demo recordings, most of which never saw the light of day officially. A couple of weeks ago, Idolator put a up a new demo from Rivers entitled ‘Pig’. I have no idea exactly where it comes from or what it’s intended for. The only thing I do know is that I kind of like it.
In just the course of a few minutes, Rivers narrates an entire lifespan of someone, from a happy childhood through to getting married and having kids to eventual death. It’s quite an achievement to cover the life cycle so efficiently, and on the most part, it’s made to sound pretty good. There’s nothing here beyond an indifferent voice and an acoustic guitar in a style that isn’t a million miles away from Elliott Smith. The only problem is that it seems to fall apart a couple of minutes in when Rivers moves from gentle narration to over the top high pitched singing.
It’s certainly a good effort though, and the most interesting Weezer related material I’ve heard in the past five years. I look forward to hearing more of it, even if I’m probably setting myself up for further crushing disappointment.

It’s a new demo and it’s about the life of a pig if you’ll listen to the lyrics a little closer.
Very cool tune, mixing the free verse/rapping he did in Beverly Hills…into the more standard Weezer fare (verse/chorus/verse).
Great post.
By the by, everyone realizes Pinkerton was an amazing album…one amazing album should not negate following albums by a band who is clearly not trying to replicate its past…and thank God for that. There are enough bands in the world who attempt to remake their ‘best’ albums only to get labelled as boring and stale.
Have a great April 24th!
Spoken like a true douche. Pig kicks most of the bands you listen to’s ass.
Hi.
I’m a chilean big fan of Weezer and Rivers Cuomo, so I’m so pleased to listen this new demo.
May I ask for your help? Can you send me the instrumental version of Burndt Jamb? I really need this song and I looked for it over the net without any luck.
Thanks a lot. From Antofagasta, Chile.
Luis.
i liked it, but if you take away the fact hes a huge rock star it sounds pretty ordinary. still enjoyable tho
this song is great! the lyrics are great and the music is super catchy. a new demo means a new album. the 6th album is on the way! :)
can anyone pick out all the lyrics and post them?
That would be really nice.
Thankssss,

The first paragraph about Pinkerton made me think I have a twin! I’ve said and felt exactly that. It’s my favorite album and I’ve been waiting for the dream follow-up ever since. The pre-release hype before Make Believe made me think that a masterpiece was on the way - but it was the worst offer yet. I will still keep hoping but I can’t believe in it based on past album experience. But still =w= forever - Pinkerton makes sure of that.
[...] “Pig” by Rivers Cuomo leaked on the web in early April. You would expect that I, of all people, would know about this immediately, or at least soon after. But no — I didn’t find out for over a month. Idolator knew before me. Rolling Stone knew before me. Even my girlfriend knew before me. And didn’t tell me because she thought it was a foregone conclusion that I’d know about it. Next up: I go a half-year not knowing about the next Radiohead album. [...]
…it’s about the life of a pig if you’ll listen to the lyrics a little closer.”
you could be terribly mistaken my friend, sure it sounds like it could be about the life of a pig, however, it could be about anything, you never know.
as for the song, i love it.
A “second pinkerton!” I rather hear about a “second blue album!”
I juz think, with that idea, that weezemen would get a bitching amount of cash and sa hot girls, so women won’t be a nightmare to Cuomo.
Heh, that sums it up!!!
Anyway, Pig is tha bomb, but it doesn’t beat the sweater song. Sorry Folks and Folkettes!
A “second pinkerton!” I rather hear a “second blue album!” Yet, Pig is outrageously stuck in my head, it just doesn’t beat the sweater song. Sorry faires and fairytales! That sums it up, Eddie!
Pig is wuz in my iPOD and it’s my second favorite song. Sweater Song- Undone beats Pig, ya know Eddie!
Weezer is awesome.
Even if their past few albums haven’t quite blasted me away, there’s always something that catches my attention.
At least they’re not like those other bands where every album is just a repeat of the same thing.
