The Vines tell us to “get out”, ideally to anywhere their music isn’t playing

The Vines

I usually make it point to not write about the songs that I don’t like. This isn’t so much a decision based on wanting to be nice to everyone so much as I only have so much time to write on here, so it may as well be about the good stuff. Then this track dropped into my inbox.

Fucking hell.

Now, to be fair, I should probably point out that I don’t have very much against . They certainly aren’t a band I like by any stretch of the imagination. But I did enjoy a couple of the songs on their 2002 Highly Evolved album. Sure, they were little more than vacuous guitar rock, but they were fun enough.

But this, this is just shit. It’s as if the band hasn’t moved on at all since that release. Honestly, if I didn’t have a document in front of me telling this was off of a new album, I’d think it was one of those original songs. I could rename this Get Free and it’d be bloody hard for anyone to tell the difference.

It’s not even as if the words make any sense. “Find a home now / See where you get / Sleeping alone now / Or making a friend” he proclaims halfway through the song. While the ingenious use of “now” and “now” is indeed impressive, I still don’t have a clue what singer Craig Nicholls is going on about. “Rock is back” announced Rolling Stone at the time of the first record. It’s things like this that make you wish it would go away again.

The press release says Melodia will be out on March 24 via Ivy League. The band’s website says it’s out now. Decide for yourselves kids.
