Loney Dear likes the name John far too much for someone named Emil

I should probably post something a little nicer today after yesterday’s vitriol.
A couple of years ago, the blogoplanet was getting all excited about Loney Dear (is there a comma or not?) and his first big release, Loney, Noir. I never quite got it at the time. Nothing wrong with it certainly, but pretty standard misery pop to me. So I wasn’t exactly rushing to give his new album a listen. Which is unfortunate, as from initial listens, it’s a hell of a lot better.
Airport Surroundings launches a startling assault that demands immediate attention. Soon enough, the words begin, gentler than you’d expect from the urgency of their backing. This contrast could easily fall flat, and it almost does given how close the music is to drowning out the words. Taking in every detail is a challenge in itself, but the result is rewarding.
Dear John was released in January via Polyvinyl.
