The Late Cretaceous

are a “dino-core” band. Their demo CD is actually called Demosaurus. They sing folk songs about the T-Rex isn’t so bad once you get to know him. It’s hard to know whether to take bands like this seriously. This slots in right next to the kind of “wizard rock” that has sprung up around Harry Potter, but thankfully isn’t as nauseating.

Now obviously that does limit how far a band can actually go. There are only so many songs that you can come up with about dinosaurs before it all becomes just a bit too absurd. But at the moment it’s actually quite entertaining. If Harold & Maude Were Dinosaurs is exactly what it sounds like, eventually coming to the conclusion that “they’d still be Harold & Maude”, which is kind of nice really.

The recording quality on these songs isn’t exactly the best, but I suppose the finest production values aren’t to be expected. The lo-fi sound to it all actually adds something to it’s charm. A band like this walks a very line fine, where it would be so easy to cross into irritating territory. As it stands, it’s all utterly silly, but somehow it manages to work.
