Music festivals in Kent 2010
Jun 8th
Apparently there’s little in the way of clear information out there for exactly what is happening music wise in Kent. At least I assume this is the case as my Music festivals in Kent 2009 post still gets a ton of traffic. So in the interests of post whoring, and actually providing useful information, here’s a brief guide to just how pathetic this part of the country is. There were three major festivals down this way last year. This year two of them remain. Why? Because Sellindge has been cancelled over issues with Paypal. I shit you not.

HOP FARM FESTIVAL
When 2-3 July
Where The Hop Farm, Paddock Wood
How much £135 weekend / £45 Friday / £65 Saturday
Lineup (AFoR endorsements in bold)
Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Ray Davies, Blondie, Mumford & Sons, Dr. John and the Lower 911, Seasick Steve, Peter Doherty, Laura Marling, Los Lobos, Johnny Flynn, Imelda May, The Magic Numbers, Damien Dempsey, Foy Vance, Devendra Banhart, Afro Celt Sound System, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Richard Thompson, Tunng, Peter Green & Friends, Villagers, Stornaway, Jim Jones Revue, Sweet Billy Pilgrim, Pete Molinari, Sparrow and the Workshop, Alan Pownall, Paris Riots, Jon Allen, Kill It Kid, The Ruskins, Pope Joan, Synth Eastwood, Hoodlums, Empress, Billy Vincent, The Minutes, Eight Legs, Waler, Peter Lawrie, Archie Wars Wars, Liz and the Ligers, East Park Reggae Collective, Brigid Power-Ryce, Joker & the Thief, Aaron Wright & the Aprils, Stefan Galt, Andy Docherty, Al Medley Collective, Red Room, Uncles of Funk.
After the clusterfuck that was last year’s Hop Farm, the Vince Power organised event seems to be trying to desperately reposition itself as a slightly more grown-up festival with more of a folky-acoustic kind of vibe. Which is fine I suppose, but there’s very little on that lineup that appeals to me. Hell, I haven’t even heard of the vast majority of the acts. That won’t stop me going though. How many other chances will there be to see Dylan play locally?

And if that wasn’t enough excitement for you, there’s always this year’s Rochester Castle Concerts, which boats Status Quo, Will Young and the Saturdays. Yeah, Kent is just awesome for music.
AFoR Advent: Glam Chops
Dec 1st
The only time I ran Christmas songs on this blog was the excitement that was AFoR Advent back in 2006, the very first year of this place. I didn’t run it again in 2007 because posting the same songs again seemed a bit crap and I didn’t run it in 2008 because, well, I didn’t post anything for six months and that included Christmas. I’ve got a whole bunch of new Christmas songs to work with this year though, so I’m going for it once again. I should point out that I don’t actually have enough though but hope to find more as we go along. So if you’d like to recommend something (which is available as a free mp3) or are in a band and have a Christmas song of your own you’d like to contribute, please get in touch.
I should also point out that I can’t actually stand Christmas all that much. As such, I’m not much of a fan of the traditional Christmas ditties, unless something interesting has been done with them. I like the slightest odd songs, and fairly often the rather miserable ones. Assuming all of this is okay with you, pop back each day for a new festive treat.
Behind our first door is the wonderfully apt Countdown to Christmas by Glam Chops. For those not keeping score at home, Glam Chops is Eddie Argos’ band that isn’t Art Brut, The Art Goblins, The English Travelling Wilburys, Everybody Was In The French Resistance…Now and probably several hundred others. If the name wasn’t a clue, the band go for an all-out glam sound. Not really my cup of tea on the most part, but this is rather fun.
It’s full of sage advice (“Just don’t worry about the economy, until the middle of January”), some amusing call and response vocals and celebrating those typically British Christmas institutions like double-issues of the Radio Times. The only thing it’s really missing is a shout-out to the Christmas Top of the Pops.
Oh, wait a minute, that’s the wrong band.
Music festivals in Kent 2009
May 24th
As part as our ongoing attempts to cover what little exists of a Kent music scene, it seemed only prudent to put together a brief guide to the major music festivals taking place in the county over the next couple of months. A few years ago such a thing would have been impossible due to a lack of said events, but now new festivals seem to be popping up each year. Obviously not all of them work (like Electric Gardens) and some will probably have their organisers lynched if they ever come back (Zoo8) but it’s good to see a varied selection appearing.

In 2007, Sellindge was populated by bands you’ve never heard of. Last year, they managed to nab Idlewild to headline more bands you’ve never heard of. This year, there are a few solid bands at the top of the bill, a handful of decent ones underneath, and of course, a whole slew that you’ve never heard of. Still, for the money you can’t really go wrong.

When July 5-6
Where The Hop Farm, Paddock Wood
How much £125 weekend / £65 daily
Lineup (AFOR endorsements in bold)
The Fratellis, Editors, Doves, Echo & The Bunnymen, Ash, The Pigeon Detectives, The View, Mystery Jets, Super Furry Animals, Paul Weller, Ladyhawke, 65daysofstatic, British Sea Power, The Rifles, Alex Gopher, Noah and the Whale, Bell X1, Cage the Elephant, The Twang, The Twilight Sad, Howling Bells, Florence and The Machine, Johnny Foreigner, Eight Legs, Dananananaykroyd, Jape, Fight Like Apes, Etienne De Crecy, That Petrol Emotion, Let’s Wrestle, Dr. Lektroluv, D.I.M, The Chapman Family, Burn The Negative, The Good the Bad, R.S.A.G, and 2Manydj’s
The Hop Farm Festival has jumped from being a one-day event last year to a two day festival this year. It’s gimmick is that it has no sponsorship (yay!) and no VIP areas (boo!). Of course, such things come at a price, which results in the excessive £125 cost for the weekend. Which is a shame as I actually quite like the lineup. The main stage doesn’t do much for me, but the creatively named “third stage” with the likes of Johnny Foreigner, Let’s Wrestle and Dananananaykroyd looks like the place to be.

Lounge on the Farm is the almost the little festival that could. Growing from strength to strength over since the first in 2006, the event now boasts over 100 acts including a decent mix between minor recognisable bands and a ton of local talent. Operated by the same team that run the delightful Farmhouse in Canterbury, they really do seem to be doing everything they can to foster a local scene.
Dog Day: Sadly, Batman isn’t actually in the band
Apr 30th

Dog Day are a band I was vaguely aware of back around the time of their last album a couple of years back. I had a bunch of their stuff but never really got on with it, despite it being well regarded. It was nice enough, but it never inspired me to write about them on here.
Thankfully previous mediocrity doesn’t stop me listening when new songs arrive, and Happiness is the kind of thing that makes me glad to have such a policy. Starting solidly enough with a synth heavy opener, it quickly excels into something more. This is a dark, brooding song, punctuated with various unexpected noises. It’s one of those things where I suspect I might find an entire album to be just a bit much, but these two minutes are one hell of a ride.
Concentration is out this week on Outside Music.
Dogs Die in Hot Cars – I Love You ‘Cause I Have To
Aug 8th

I don’t know if Dogs Die in Hot Cars are broken up or whether they are together again. Seeing as it’s a Friday, I’m going to go with back together though. Last I heard they were trying to put together a second album, although it’s been quiet again for a while, so who knows where things currently stand?
The unfortunate thing about the original sudden demise of Dogs Die in Hot Cars was that they left behind a superb album that became destined to be quietly forgotten. Which is a shame as it’s full of excellent XTC-alike pop songs, something which is in short supply these days. While at the time the band never really troubled the charts (this one hit the heady heights of #32!), it isn’t that hard to imagine them in the place of The Maccabees or The Kaiser Chiefs had things gone slightly differently for them.
I’ll wait for you at the car park of the busy shopping centre..
Mar 13th
It sounds like Johnny Foreigner have finally pulled themselves out of the dustbin they were recording in, if the new recordings on their Myspace are anything to go by. The band have gone back and put together some new versions of old favourites ‘Sometimes, In The Bullring’ and ‘Sofacore’, and they sound fantastic. This isn’t an entire sea change though, as there is still very much a DIY feel to these recordings, but in a way where you can actually hear the words now.

Now I’m not one for things like karaoke, but if I were, this just might be the greatest thing ever. A fairly lengthy list of indie songs, all done in karaoke format (no vocal, guided lyrics). While it’s largely made up of “known” indie bands (meaning shit ones), there are a few obscure gems in there like Belle & Sebastian’s ‘She’s Losing It’, Malkmus’ ‘Jenny & The Ess Dog’ and Arcade Fire’s ‘Laika’. Guaranteed hours of fun, if you like that sort of thing.

I’ve been loving this song for quite some time now, so it’s great that I’m finally able to write about it. It’s the first single from the second album by Brakes (I’m not calling them brakesbrakesbrakes, no matter how many promo emails try and get me to), and it’s better than anything that was on their impressive first album. Like most of their songs, it’s short and to the point, including a dig at our government’s draconian anti-terror legislation (I woke up late and found my liberty lost / It had been written down in law as a security cost / 28 days and I’m presumed guilty). It also scores extra points for being able to namedrop Scarlett Johannson, which must be something of an awkward name to work into song.

Pitchfork ‘for the fiftieth time, we’re not a fucking music blog’ Media wins “Best Weblog about Music” at the 2007 Bloggies. Strangely don’t feature it in their news section.

Assembly Now have now made another one of their singles available for free download on their website, meaning you can now get hold of all of their official releases for free. ‘Leigh-On-Sea’ is the single, ‘Tenement’ is the b-side, but they are both great songs. These guys will be supporting the also rather good Wombats on an upcoming tour of the UK, including a stop near my neck of the woods in Tunbridge Wells, which should be fun.

AFoR Advent, day 9: The Eels
Dec 9th
Much as I’ve tried, I just can’t seem to get into The Eels. I can appreciate them to a certain degree, and there’s a few songs which I really like, but I’ve never felt the urge to rush out to get one of their albums added to my collection.
This song, ‘Christmas Is Going To The Dogs’, seems to be an alt-Christmas soundtrack staple, appearing on both The Grinch OST and one of those never ending OC “mixes”. Not to say it isn’t deserving, but that just seems excessive to me. As for the song itself, it’s as surreal as you’d expect from a guy that calls himself ‘E’. I’m not sure it makes a great deal of sense, and I’m pretty certain parts of it are sung from a dog’s point of view or something, but there you go. Not the greatest Christmas song in the world, but it certainly beats Cliff Richard’s yearly offering at least.
MP3 The Eels – Christmas Is Going To The Dogs (expired)
Pony Up!
Oct 26th
I first listened to a song by Pony Up! months ago, when I got hold of ‘The Truth About Cats and Dogs (Is That They Die)’. I thought it was a fun enough pop song, and it made its way onto my iPod. Then I didn’t really give the band any more thought. While working a few days ago though, iTunes played me a fantastic song. Of course, it was the same one, this time somehow striking a much better chord with me. This has led to a few days of trying to get hold of as many Pony Up! songs as I could before listening to the lot of them on repeat rather obsessively. And believe me, I’m not a guy who uses the repeat button very often.
‘Pony Up’ are four girls from Montreal. I don’t know why I point that out other than the fact that I can’t think of another band that has an entirely female line-up that I enjoy. They formed in 2002, and spent the following three years touring before ever releasing anything. When they did, it was a split 7″ with Ben Lee, which is certainly one way to get yourselves recognised quickly. This was quickly followed by a self-titled EP and this years debut full-length, ‘Make Love To The Judges With Your Eyes’.
The appeal here is that these are perfectly crafted pop songs. They sound catchy, to the point, and have the kind of honesty that’s not as common as it should be. ‘Shut Up and Kiss Me’ in particular is about an honest a song you’re ever going to hear about a one night stand (‘Let’s be aware of what we’re doing / Not aware of what you’re losing / I am sorry that you’re stupid / I can’t be your fucking cupid’). Bleak content? Of course. Fantastic song though? Absolutely.
MP3 Pony Up! – Shut Up and Kiss Me
MP3 Pony Up! – The Truth About Cats and Dogs (Is That They Die)
‘Shut Up And Kiss Me’ is taken from Pony Up!’s self-titled EP while ‘The Truth About Cats and Dogs (Is That They Die)’ is from ‘Make Love To The Judges With Your Eyes’.
Live: Quadmyre at Bluewater
Aug 21st
Regular readers of this blog will know that I don’t talk about local music very often. Part of this is because I like to write about bands that genuinely excite me, and only a handful can manage that. The larger part of this though is that I’m just not really familiar with the local scene. I’ve been trying to rectify this of late, partly out of necessity as I want to try and get into live music promotion in the area. Anyway, you may remember a few months ago when I went to see Kate Nash, I ended up catching a local band called Quadmyre who I rather liked the sound of. A few weeks ago the band let me know that they would be playing a set at Bluewater as part of a several day music event that would be happening there.
Now for those of you unfamiliar with the area, Bluewater is a large shopping centre. In fact, I think it may be the largest in Europe, but don’t quote me on that. My point is that it’s hardly the place to hold a music festival type thing. As the weeks went on, I could find absolutely nothing on the net about the event, and even people who should have known about it had no clue. Put simply, this was the most poorly advertised event that I have ever heard of. There was absolutely nothing in the way of promotion for it. When I got the place on the day, I had no idea where to go, and only after wandering around for a bit did I find a stage outside of the food court with some kid belting out cover versions. That’s the kind of event that this was. He was quickly followed by an Elvis impersonator, which was about the time I decided to go and look around the shops for a while. I headed back outside just before Quadmyre were due on to find a small crowd and the band setting up, and everything seemed to be going well enough. That’s until it started pouring with rain just as the band started, sending a lot of the crowd heading for cover and making the few remaining die-hards take refuge in the tent, which was helpfully set up a long way back from the stage as the picture demonstrates.
As for Quadmyre themselves, they played an excellent set despite these setbacks. This was the first time I’d seen them play a complete set. Well, that’s actually a lie. I saw the whole set at the Beacon Court show, I just wasn’t really paying attention until they won me over about halfway through. They had a 45 minute slot, and made full use of it, getting through a ton of songs of varying sounds, from 60s styled pop numbers to ballads to a fantastic closer called (I think) ‘Quadyssey’ that was full on rock opera. Looking into the band, it seems that they only starting playing together last year and yet they already sound great together and have a ton of fully prepared songs. The guitars play wonderfully off of each other, and the band harmonises perfectly behind lead singer Greg’s impressive vocals. They didn’t play either of the songs that are available below at the Bluewater show, but these are the ones that are available online for your enjoyment.
MP3 Quadmyre – Free Thing (expired)
MP3 Quadmyre – Night Out (expired)
Quadmyre will be playing this Sunday at the Beacon Court Tavern in Gillingham. Other bands playing are Mary’s Dog and The Anasazi. Doors open at 7:30pm, £3 entry, which goes to charity.
Hot, hot, bloody heat
Jun 12th
I’ve been pretty slack in my blogging for the past few days, partly because I’ve been busy with a couple of other projects, and partly because of the damn heat. I don’t react well to heat at all, so when it’s 31 degrees in here even at 11pm, I get a little thrown. Something that really isn’t help by the fact I’ve obliged to be here for work, so escape isn’t much of an option. In celebration of this, I present to you a handful of loosely thrown together, heat related songs.
MP3 Dogs Die In Hot Cars – Lounger (expired)
MP3 Brainiac – Hot Seat, Can’t Sit Down (expired)
MP3 Hot Hot Heat – Goodnight, Goodnight (expired)
TheClerisy News
We’re finally getting TheClerisy.com up and running, and a bunch of our sites have now launched. There are a few more, including a personal blog for me and the forum to be put in place over the coming days, but check out what we’ve got so far.
Which brings me to the launch of TheClerisy’s very own television blog, Taking Civics Lessons from Hookers. This is a project of a good friend of mine, Rob, and he will be filling a niche in the blog world: namely an in depth and critical blog that focuses on television.
On a more personal note, I’ll be working with another good friend Dan on a pilot for a Channel 102 show. Best of all, we’re letting our readers decide exactly which pilot we should make, from three that have been written. So head on over to Planeteleven where you can read all three and register your vote. (I don’t want to sway your vote, but ‘Statutory’ is the way to go.)
Holy crap! A festival in Kent?
I may well be heading to my first festival in august. Anyone who knows Kent will know that it’s a cultural wasteland, so I was rather shocked to discover the Electric Gardens Festival, a brand new festival near Canterbury. The sunday lineup is all about the indie rock, and while it doesn’t have the worlds greatest selection, it has The Boy Least Likely To, Brakes, Duels, Battle and a bunch of others to keep me entertained.
That’s all for now. Normal service will hopefully resume tomorrow, assuming I haven’t melted away or something in the meantime.
