Politics
Where I foolishly combine politics and music
7
Anyone who knows me will know that I’m a very political person. As such, you can’t really expect me to not bring the topic up today. May 4 is local election day across much of the UK, with around 4,400 local council seats up for election across roughly a third of the country. If you are unsure whether or not your council is up for election, the BBC have a helpful guide.
Now it certainly isn’t my style to try and push my political beliefs onto you in any way. I’m not going to encourage you to vote for any one political party. I’d just like to encourage you to actually vote. If you want to vote Lib Dem, that’s awesome. If you want to vote Conservative, that’s ok too. Hell, if you want to vote Labour, despite some minor troubles, and can do so in good conscience, that’s your choice. Just don’t waste your opportunity. Have an opinion. Whatever it is.

So, so long to all you “moderates”,
Yeah, it’s time for getting down.
Your peace and quiet is criminal,
While there’s injustice in your town.
Colbert’s ‘Crossfire’
0This is the one of the rare non-mp3 posts, but I feel this deserves an audience. Last night, Stephen Colbert hosted the White House Press Dinner. This is an annual event where the President and the media come together and poke fun at themselves and each other. I was a tad surprised when I read that Colbert would be hosting it, and he certainly didn’t disappoint. He absolutely laid into Bush, the administration and just about everyone else in attendance. This has to be one of the most awkward things that I have ever seen, as the audience has absolutely no idea how to react to much of it.
Watch this excellent moment of car crash television below:
(Edit: I’ve replaced the original video with a higher quality one that covers the entire speech. Due to length, it’s split into two parts. You can find Part 2 here.)
Highlights:
“Fox News gives you both sides of every story. The President’s side and the Vice President’s side.”
“This adminsitration is not sinking. This administration is soaring. If anything, they are rearranging the deckchairs on the Hindenburg.”
“By the way enjoy that metaphor. Your grandchildren will have no idea what a glacier is.”
Bush looked a tad pissed after this, not smiling at all as he shook Colbert’s hand when he left the stage. I know Colbert does this kind of thing on a daily basis on his show, but to do it a few feet away from Bush and most of the administration is another thing entirely. I’m just happy that he made it out of there alive.
(If you’re unfamiliar with the ‘Crossfire’ reference in the title, you might want to watch this.)
