Top 44 Songs of 2007: #17-9
2Yay, we’re almost done. Which is good as I have a lot of other things I want to write about and I’m kind of bored of this list now.

Okkervil River – Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe

Like Two Gallants earlier on in this list, Okkervil River are a band that I sort of like based on the songs I’ve heard, but have never been able to get hugely into. I never found the one song that managed to blow me away, despite vaguely enjoy the ones I did hear. Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe changed all that though. I don’t know what it is that does it, as it sounds like a lot of other Okkervil River songs, but something does it. Maybe it’s the gentle builds to lines crashing lines, the film referencing or the vague ambiguity of it all, I have no idea. But it works.

Laura Sings Liver – Adieu, Little Boy Bleu

Opening lines don’t come much better than that. Granted, like me, you may have to look up ‘solipsistic’, which incidentally is a great word, but one I sadly haven’t had the chance to drop into conversation yet. Laura Sings Liver is one girl (shockingly called Laura) with a guitar who makes these literate little songs that manage to evoke a an entire world in the course of three minutes. You know, kind of like Emmy, except great.

Johnny Foreigner – Yes! You Talk Too Fast

Far and away the biggest success story of 2007, Johnny Foreigner went from songs with potential that sounded awful to becoming the most exciting band in the country. Their debut EP type thing, Arcs Across the City, was my favourite release of last year, featuring six songs, all of which were stunning. Yes! You Talk Too Fast has always been a favourite, so it made the list, but like Laura Sings Liver above, any of those songs could have been here.

Los Campesinos! – The International Tweexcore Underground

It’s almost as if Los Campesinos! had my checklist of things that make a song great when coming up with The International Tweexcore Underground. Sparring boy-girl vocals? Frequent time changes? References to seemingly forgotten twee artists? All present and accounted for. The song seems to be about a boy who likes twee and a girl who likes hardcore rock, and they come together by combining it to form tweecore? Something like that maybe? I really have no idea, as it’s far too tempting to ignore what the words are actually saying and just shout along with them anyway.

Brakes – Hold Me In The River

The first single from the second album by Brakes (I’m not calling them brakesbrakesbrakes, no matter how many promo emails try and get me to), and it’s better than anything that was on their impressive first album. Like most of their songs, it’s short and to the point, including a dig at our government’s draconian anti-terror legislation (“I woke up late and found my liberty lost / It had been written down in law as a security cost / 28 days and I’m presumed guilty”). It also scores extra points for being able to namedrop Scarlett Johannson, which must be something of an awkward name to work into song.
12
George Pringle – Carte Postale

L’apathie de la bourgeoisie.

4 or 5 Magicians – Conversational Karate

I was going to write about Conversational Karate, but since I started this list, 4 or 5 Magicians have put up a whole load of new songs on their Myspace. Just go there and listen to them instead. Every single one of them is fantastic. If these guys don’t get some kind of proper record deal and an album out sometime this year, there’s no justice in the world.
10
My Sad Captains – All Hat and No Plans

Get past their awkward name, and you’ve got a band that does genuinely invoke a 90s Americana kind of vibe from their music. Which is a pretty impressive for a band from London. The guitars guide the songs between the gentler verses to the bursts of noise that seem to prop up the choruses. It’s never over the top, giving a feel the whole time that they band could kick into high gear at any minute, but these guys are far too restrained for that.
9
Andrej and Tim – Iraq

A rather local band that has seemingly ended before it began, Andrej and Tim was two guys (can you guess their names?) who made fantastic Ben Folds Five style piano-rock songs. I’m don’t think Iraq ever made it past the demo stage, but it’s still an excellent song. The story of a relationship that’s falling apart while managing to pull in parallels to situation in a certain country, it remains one of the finest songs that I heard last year. The ninth finest in fact.
Write me a letter that I’ll never reply to..

The Tacticians are two brothers called Joe and Ollie who have been making a small name for themselves through constant gigging around London and their ability to craft an excellent pop song. A song with a title like ‘Hardcore Porn’ might bring up images of Barenaked Ladies style wackyness, but it’s actually an endearing tale about friendships that drift apart. It’s this skill to make an upbeat, simple sounding song that actually masks a deeper layer of complexity underneath that demonstrates the subtle skill to be found in their songwriting. I can see these guys developing quite the following as we move through the year.

Speaking of The Tacticians, they are featured on an upcoming collection featuring the very best in new music coming out of the London scene. Entitled ‘Baby I’m Yours’, the release from DC Baby Records also includes Another Form of Relief favourites Beeches alongside other such great acts as Kill Electric and The Distance. It’s out next monday (January 29), and the label will be celebrating with a launch gig this saturday at The Fiddler’s Elbow in Camden where a whole bunch of the bands on the collection will be playing. Best of all, it’ll only cost you a mere £3 to get in. I’m sure I’ll be writing about this collection in more closely in the near future, but for now you can get more details from the DC Baby website, where you can also listen to the collection in full.

It had to happen eventually. Somebody has put together a “lost episode” of Seinfeld and put it up on Youtube. It’s a very clever splicing of various Seinfeld clips, Michael Richards’ comedy club rant and his subsequent apology on Letterman. It shouldn’t work, but it’s pretty damn funny.

Just when you think that Kent is entirely devoid of musical excitement, not one, but two fantastic gigs come along. Unfortunately, they are on the same day, so you’re going to have to take your pick. Both of these shows are this Friday (January 26). Both will start around 8pm, and both will cost you a few pounds to get into. None of which is too vague at all.
First off, recent discoveries Andrej and Tim will be playing at the Tunbridge Wells Forum. The show looks like being a lot of fun, and I’m assured that there will be Shakespeare passages and possibly even a Christina Aguilera cover involved. You really can’t go wrong with that, can you?
While I would love to be there for that, I’m going to be seeing The Indelicates at The Command House in Chatham. Decent gigs in Kent are rare enough, but ones within Medway are the kind of thing that demands a parade. For those unfamiliar, The Indelicates have a sound that’s somewhere in between The Pogues and Kate Bush. ‘New Art For The People’ comes across as a latter day ‘Fairytale of New York’, ‘Waiting For Pete Doherty To Die’ is a scathing attack on those that attack him but still follow his every move, while ‘Julia, We Don’t Live In The 60s’ is just a perfect pop song. Oh, and if that isn’t enough for you, one of them is an ex-Pipette and they are best friends with Art Brut.

Andrej and Tim

I often say that I’m going to write more about the “local” scene here in Kent, but I never seem to get around to it. This is because I find most of the bands here wholly uninspiring. Every now and again though I come across one that is doing something different that gets me excited. With that in mind, I now present to you a band from the Sevenoaks/Tunbridge Wells area called Andrej and Tim. You may think that their name is a little dull, but I’ll allow the guys in the band to field that one:
Our band is called Andrej and Tim, because we consist of a drummer named Andrej and a pianist named Tim. It’s hard to find a band name that doesn’t expose yourself to ridicule. “The Boobies”, “Four Functions” and “Intellectual Plethora” all failed to make the grade. Inspired by a time we had dined out together Andrej suggested the name “The Cooks”, which we briefly entertained, only to realise some second rate indie group was masquerading under something very similar.
Now that’s settled, let me tell you about their music. This is simple, upbeat piano pop. I’m a big fan of the piano and don’t think it gets used enough in indie circles. It’s kind of unfortunate that those who do use it tend to be eternal blandsters like Keane and Coldplay. Anyway, Andrej and Tim bring back the piano in the way that it was used for groups like Ben Folds Five, while making the whole exercise even simpler. While that band had three members which included a bass, Andrej and Tim strip things down to just a piano and drums. Which may not sound all that thrilling but it’s amazing what they are able to do with it.
Both of the songs below are demos, but they show a new band with a lot of talent. These are catchy, literate songs that like to play around with time signatures, meaning you never really know where the songs are going to head next. ‘Iraq’ is the kind of politically aware yet entertaining song that seems to be sadly missing in music discourse these days while ‘Jontan’ is the kind of wonderous upbeat pop number that has a shade of Ben Folds Five at their peak. I know that’s twice I’ve come back to BFF, but it really is a testament to how good these guys are that it’s the obvious comparison.

Andrej and Tim: Myspace
–
So I had a good clean up of my Myspace friends list the other day. I removed all of the people who had seemingly been hijacked by spambots and all of the shitty bands that had made their way onto there. This means I’m back down to a ‘mere’ 250 friends now. Which may make me sound hugely popular, although at least 90% of those are bands. Still, without the spam and crappy bands messaging me about their crappy gigs, I don’t have a great deal to read on there now. If you’re in a band or just like my little blog in general, feel free to add me. I am fully aware that this may be the saddest paragraph that I have ever posted on this blog.
In more exciting news, the wonderful Indelicates will be playing The Command House in Chatham on Friday 26 January. Not only is this is great because it means a fantastic band is coming to this crudpit, it’s also the day before my birthday. Hurrah!
The Official God FAQ also just might be the most helpful webpage on the internet.
I’ve used “Hurrah!” twice in the past week. Should I be worried?
