Milky Wimpshake – Cherry Pop

join the MTV generation!!! Fuckin sellouts!” – Pete Dale

When it comes to certain bands, there are just some things that you don’t expect from them.  If you’d told me a while ago that I’d be posting a somewhat amusing Milky Wimpshake music video on here, I’d have found the idea quite preposterous.  Yet here we are.  After nearly two decades of churning out songs and becoming legends within the indiepop scene, they’ve finally got around to making a video.  And very good fun it is too, even with it’s wanton destruction of cherry bakewells.

Cherry Pop is taken from My Funny Social Crime, which is available now via Fortuna POP! The band will also be headlining the indoor stage at Indietracks on July 30.

Last night was our second DJing experience, and it was rather a contrast to the first time around.  It was all rather last minute, meaning I didn’t have five weeks to fret about song choices.  It was in a coffee shop instead of a bar with a dance floor, and given the rain and other factors, there wasn’t exactly a big turnout.  Didn’t matter though as I still ended up enjoying myself immensely.  Here’s what I played:

1. – Tell Me Something I Don’t Know

2. Belle & Sebastian – Your Cover’s Blown

3. – The Mild Mannered Army

4. – Banned at the Troxy

5. – Carve a Pattern

6. – Lost Weekend

7. – Hopelessly Wasted

8. – You Can Hide Your Love Forever

9. – C Is The Option

10. – Perfection As A Hipster

11. – True Love/Youth

12. – Your Feelings Don’t Show

13. – My Terrible Friend

14. – Higher Grounds

15. – I Love You Like A Madman

16. – Dinner Party

17. Allo Darlin’ – Let’s Go Swimming

18. – Cross the Line

Indietracks Compilation 2011

2

It’s June, so it must mean it’s time for the obligatory Indietracks compilation album. Sadly this year it won’t be released on CD in an attempt to reduce costs, meaning you’ll have to burn your own discs for the long drive up. On the other hand, as it’s a download only, you can pay whatever you like for it with all proceeds going to the lovely Midland Railway Centre. Every year they put up with us descending on them, so it’s nice to be able to give them a little something back.

The release comes with some spectacularly good music for your money as well. Tracks from headliners Herman Dune, , and are all well and good, but there’s a treasure trove of lesser known bands here too. There’s new songs from , and , and some rare songs from likes of and . Then you’ve got all of the bands that you’re suddenly a fan of by the time you’ve finished the release. Looking at you Wendy Darlings, and !

There’s so much good stuff here that it’s almost criminal that you can have the release from whatever price you want. That even includes nothing, but that would make you WORSE THAN HITLER, so you won’t be doing that, will you? You can stream the entire thing below, and you can buy it from the Make Do and Mend Records Bandcamp page.

Milky Wimpshake – I Wanna Be Seen In Public With You

1

I wanna beat you fair and square in chess
I wanna watch you get undressed
I wanna phone you at 5 am
I wanna waste some time with you again

You know when you find a song that just absolutely clicks for you?  It can be for any reason at all really.  The music just hits the right tone of your mood, or the lyrics are dramatically more meaningful all of a sudden?  A song can become important to us for any number of reasons, but the result is always the same.

The first time I heard was on the Indietracks 2008 CD.  In fact, it was this song in particular.  I liked it, but when the next song played, that was that.  Earlier this week though, the iPod sticks it on while shuffling, and it’s something akin to an epiphany.  Everything about it just worked.  It’s not a particularly complex, largely just a list of “I wanna” lines about an object of affection, but that’s it’s charm.  It has a certain innocence to it all that’s impossible to not like.  The fact it manages to rock the fuck out at the same time doesn’t do it any harm either.

So this past week has been spent mainly listening to as much Milky Wimpshake as I could get my hands on.  There is a bunch to download on the website and I got a bunch more from eMusic too.  A new favourite song at the start of the week has become a new favourite band by the end.
